The strategy is to organize and change how the culture works, and with more Black people in design we are able to use our creativity to avoid law enforcement.Īndre’s most important message that he is sending out through is to lead with his heart and to show the purity and authenticity of who he is and who he came from with every stroke, conversation, engagement from fashion shows, to when he was a kid drawing on a canvas. Currently, there is an all-out attack on black people, if there is pigment in your skin, you will be looked at a different way. He believes that if we get more Black men and women to have careers where they are able to use their hands or brains, the heart will allow us to not be in danger. Humanize My Hoodie is working to inspire people to humanize themselves through their own gifts.Īndre’s overall goal within fashion activism is to create a world where we are able to love more. There is a stigma around our Black youth getting help for things and a stigma about how black people do not know how to ask for help. If the kids in the community can see us as the tutors being smart in spaces, they do not usually see us, it can show that it is important to care about education all while getting the help it can be so hard to ask for as a Black person in America. A main obstacle that they had to cross was how to make tutoring a cool thing. He believes that if they can see themselves being tutored by cool college kids, it could influence them into wanting to be a cool college kid and get an education themselves. It is based upon the idea representation and if you can see it, you can be it. To Andre, representation is shown within the Humanize My Hoodie Homework Hotline. This is all about the work that he is putting in now, and we will see the results of that dedication. This is a problem for Andre and Humanize My Hoodie to fix and as a designer, he wants to take the step from not only designing clothes, but to design a better life for us and the kids that are coming up next. There are not a lot of people within graphic design and what are the kids who are not self-determined like Andre supposed to do? His thought process led him to think about how every business needs a graphic designer, so why don’t we get more people that look like us in that industry. As a creative Black kid growing up in Iowa, he did not have representation and only knew he could be a graphic designer after he did his own research and was self-determined enough to go out and create that for himself. Growing up, Andre did not have any examples of what he could be or wanted to be. Representation is one of the main factors to if we will see the 3% rise to 5% and that is a main idea of what Andre focuses his role as a fashion activist on. Representation is important for all groups of people and especially for the children do not see someone like them working a job that they aspire to be one day.
